Where the Emeralds Grow...
The two monoliths in the photo on right form the basis of an ancient indigenous legend in the emerald producing Andes mountains of western Boyacá Department, Colombia. They are named Fura and (y) Tena.
The complete story is tortured and twisted but in short, Fura y Tena were a royal couple living blissfully in love for many years. When husband Tena died, Fura cried and wept inconsolably for years. Her tears permeated the rocks, cracks, and crevices deep in the earth where they crystallized into the powerfully rich, vivid-green, beautiful Colombian emeralds produced from the region to this day.
